    Default Flavored soft baits

When I went with Lowe175 last Saturday he recommended that I get some PowerBait or something similar to fish with until I got better at detecting a light strike. I went by the Guntersville Walmart and picked up a pack of 2" Power minnows. I got to slip off a little early this afternoon and I tried out the slippery little minnows. I caught a fish on my first and third casts. Both were Bluegill but they hammered it. I got bite after bite and I fished up that pack of minnows in about 15 minutes. I got what I think were a couple of crappie bites but didn't connect.

Those 2" Power Minnows are so small that they are very hard to put on a jig head with #4 hook. They are also so tender that I had to replace the minnow every time I caught a fish and several of them after a strike but no hook set. I'd have to buy 20 packs of them to fish for a half a day. I'm not doing that. They're also too small. I tried some regular soft bait with some crappie attractant "juice" poured on it but it didn't get the same attention the powerbait did.

Do any of you have a flavored "go to" bait? Any advice? I may try a 3" or 4" version of what I fished today but I doubt it's any tougher. At least the jig wouldn't tear it up as badly.

Oh, and Glenn, I got my 4# Berkely XT Solar in this afternoon and spooled up with it before going. So far I really like it and it is definitely more sensitive than the 6# broom straw Mr Crappie junk. I was surprised that the XT was as limp as it was. I've used a bunch of it on baitcasters but always have used XL on spinning tackle. Thanks for the heads up about the XT Solar.

I would recommend Bobby garland on the soft plastics They hold up well shooting docks. I mainly us hand ties I make on two lb, but when the wind is two strong and I can’t detect the bite I’ll change poles and shoot with them. Due to the fact they are around twice as heavy as my hand ties, that little bit of a weight different makes all the world in my opinion, let’s me detect the bite much better in the wind. Try a 1/32 and if your having problems detecting the bite switch to a 1/28 or even a 1/16 and hold you rod tip higher then normal and you can cover the same depth and speed at witch the 1/32 does. It may take a little time to pick it up but when you do, you’ll be amazed by what you can make the jig do.

I have slow reaction so a lot of times I’m late on the hook set but the more that I go the more I’m picking up on it also I’ve just bought me a new rod ( pro angler) and have only used it one day but I could feel the thumps and pecks on it better than anything that I have ever used .i know that the perfect rod is the one a person likes so each to their own but I think I have finally found the one I like.

Thanks for the info Cowboy. I've been using Bobby Garland jigs prior to today. I'm gonna keep plugging along til I get the hang of this.

Slab, I took a new rod today. If I had read the post you made a few days ago about your pro angler, I would have tried one of those, but the Diawa Laguna 6' that I got seems to be fairly sensitive. I opted for a medium action with a fast tip. It's got lots of backbone with a soft enough tip to shoot docks with. I just used it today for the first time and I have to hold on to the line a milisecond longer than what I've been use to. I could shoot okay with it but when I finally got everything just right I was amazed at how far it would sling that 1/32 jig head.

Thanks! Are they the same size as a normal 2" grub? Those dinky little 2" minnows I bought are about the right size for a #8 cricket hook. They are T-niney.

I was referring to the 2in grub. It's a curly tail. They will hold on longer. You could just add sent like slab sauce.

I prefer the BG 2" jigs with scent added. That profile really has worked for me over the years. You'll find your favorites as you keep after them.
