I don't know about Alabama, but around here (Arkansas) most people just drive gravel roads spotlighting the ditches. Sometimes they're not in the water, but up the bank a ways in the grass. You will need something to keep them in that they can't jump out of. Don't forget bug spray. And watch out for snakes.
