I don't think I have ever seen anyone use chain and very few socks either, I think the chains may play heck with a pile or stake bed. Around here, our lakes are smaller and we just tuck in behind a hill in a cove. wouldn't a chain be messy in the boat?

The chains started getting popular with the onsluaght of spider rigging. It was a well advertised way of keeping boat speed down. I am almost sure I saw it in the book CandC put out .

    Well,

Just because a couple of hotdogs talk about it or do it, don't make it the right thing to do.

    With fame comes responsibility.

I just keep forgetting that folks just aren't responsible for their actions anymore. Look at Hollywood. Geeeez.

I have just started using chains and I love em. I mostly use mine as anchors though. I let out bout 20' of rope and adjust my position by adding or taking in rope. 20' will stop my boat better than anchors and they are easier to handle. Mine dont drag much unless I'm working down a bank and fishing the grass and the wind is really howling and then they work great. I will continue to use them.

Only chain on my boat is the short pice between my anchor and rope! Buckets work great and come in handy when the day is done!
Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.

I use em down here, and plan to continue to. I won't purposfully drag one through someones top, but if it happens, I'm sorry. they are the ONLY way to go when spider rigging in stumps and wind. they roll off roots and stumps whereas socks and buckets get hung up. Sorry if you guys don't like it, but I reall can't see how my 3 ft chains are gonna mess with a brush top...

We use them both. I prefer the sock though. Chains are the hot thing at Reelfoot. Thats about the only place we use them. The locals swear by them. The sock is so much cleaner and every bit as effective. I have two that are like 72" at the mouth, and believe me, when you have both of them out they will SLOW you down. And when the sock hangs, a quick tug will normally pull it loose. Hung a chain once and thought we were gonna have to spend the night.

ive never used a chain and dont intend to. I use drift socks and they work like a charm at keeping me at the speed i want to drift, even in the roughest water. and if you use a chene style anchor you wont need a chain on them either.

I put out a lot of stuff, also. It helps everone that fishes! Some don't understand what we are doing, the fishing has improved greatly in these areas. I think that anyone who cares about the crappie should think before they drag anything on bottom. That includes CHAINS! Get mad if you want too. The truth is the truth.
Drift socks work real good and if you use them right they don't get hung. I have used buckets in the past and they work also. I spider rig myself, been crappie fishing over 20 years now. Never needed a CHAIN.
