Default Please read - major forum conversion coming soon....

Well, well, well, the end of life has come to our current forum format. In fact it's software has not been supported for quite a while. I'm not talking about the vBulletin software, but the software behind it. The OS and the DB we are running are junk. This is way past due. We've just been thinking of a plan to move forward with, and I think we have one.

We (my buddy Adam and I) are working on a conversion. It's going to be painful. Yes, I repeat, it's going to be painful. The first test of the conversion took two weeks to complete. A second test with multiple "updaters" was broken. So dang it, we're stuck with what's essentially a 12 day conversion.

What this means is, we will have to KINDA shutdown the site for a bit. It can still run, but updates after a certain date will not be moved to the new software system. I will announce exactly when this happens so you all know. It might be real soon, like tomorrow.

This way you can NOT MAKE BIG/GOOD POSTs like articles, or anything you want to document for posterity. I'd still be able to manually copy those "articles" forward to the new site after the fact, but I'd just want to keep that to a minimum.

And prolly the bigger issue is, the new software. There's going to be a big learning curve. It's new, it's modern, it's complex, but a couple good things I see are:
It's Mobile Friendly right out the box.
Uploads, pics and videos are easy. Can post multiple pics at once.
Videos can be posted simply by posting the the URL.
There are tons more improvements as well.

Please stay with us, it's not going to be easy, for anyone. But we have to change so that we're supported for another 20 years. Yes, I think we've been on this old software for over 20 years already. It's actually unbelievable that this was possible, but we made it work. We were able to hide our unsupported sfwr behind firewalls so that we did not get attacked by children learning data security computer stuff in classes in Hong Kong (yep, I'm serious)

I'll find a good example of the new software y'all can look at to see what it's like.

This is a good example: iNaturalist Community Forum - iNaturalist is a global community of people who are interested in sharing and discussing their observations of wild organisms.

    And here too: BimmerNut
BimmerNut is actually my site too. It's kinda dead, but it does have good repair information on it for the old E34 5-Series BMW from 1988-1995. Old bimmers, when they were actually good and repairable! lol

I'm not sure that all made sense so let me try to clarify.

Because it'll take 12 days to migrate, we will take a back out the site, and then run a 12 day conversion using that backup. So when we come up on the new site, we'll loose 12 days of updates. But we'll have the rest of the 22 years or so of data converted and available on the new site.

The old site will then not be available to you all, but I will still have access. So if there's something we needed from those 12 days of posts, I could still "copy and paste" it to the new site.

    Hope that helps.

The reason it takes 12 stinking days to do the conversion is, it is single threaded. So there's essentially a single processor making 22 years of posts, one at a time. This is even though we are running on a machine that has many processors, it's only one processor that's doing the work. We did try to "multi thread" the process but at the end of the conversion, it was broke. A single threaded conversion provides for the cleanest implementation. And I like clean, so that's what we chose.

Is there a way you could push out emails to everyone sorta like the birthday notice so those that haven’t been online lately will know and possibly come post again once updated?

So just curious, what does this mean for the app? I still have the crappie.com app on my android so am I right to assume I will have to get a new app once it is all said and done?

I'm gonna hang with you ALL the way Slab! If I'm not mistaken, there was a version of crappie.com before this software! I remember posting on it and going back to look at it again and it was GONE! I could be wrong though!

    Excellent point.

Just happened by today and saw this post.

Never have used a mobile device to view fishing sites or the web.

Old school, too small to read the screen.

Not a fan of the new look but as the song says, "Time marches on".

    Same passwords?

Might have to see if I can find mine.

    Good luck with the move.

After my company had a cybersecurity attack a couple of years ago and seeing my wife's employer going through the same over the last week+, you are right to migrate to a new platform with better security. As with everything, there will be growing pains, and we will all just have to get use to it. Thanks for keeping this site moving forward in technology!
If I'm not at work or taking kids to their activities, you might find me on "The Rez" fishing. If not there, I could be in the garage working on my boat.

Won't need an app, just use your browser on your phone. It's mobile friendly, and will work real good on your phone.

Yep, there were actually two previous formats. I forget what they were, but the very first one was super, super simple. It was pretty much text only.
