Yes, I am a Veteran ... but, I'm no "hero" and never claimed to be one. I was drafted in 1968 and was lucky enough to get sent to South Korea for my overseas deployment. I spent approx. 19months total in the Army, due to the 5mo drop for serving in a non-combat overseas deployment. Once home I was exempt from Reserves due to returning to my job as a Pharmacy Technician, which was considered a "critical civilian occupation".

Yes, I'm A Vet. A Hero...No. The Majority of my service time there were no wars. A skirmish or 2, maybe. The Iraq invaded Kuwait and the US got involved. My Battalion was transitioning from the shoebox looking M113 Armored Personnel Carriers or APC's to the Bradley Fighting Vehicles. The !!#'s turned in and in school for the Bradley's, so we were rear echelon personnel in Germany for the duration. So my full enlistment of June '77 to April '92 was non-combatant, regular Army. But hey, Someone has to be in the rear supporting those in combat. Then Clinton was elected President and Base Closings Happened and in 2 years 180,000 solders were handed pink slips and told your service is no longer needed...Here's some chump change for your time. Oh yea, that was taken back if you filed for and was rewarded ANY DISABILITY PAY of any amount. Soa very bitter pill to swallow. Hero, No, Just a solder Doing what was required...

All vets are hero's to someone. Pappy you post your pic that I've seen and I will look for a pic of myself to post. Supporting the orgs that you do is heroic to me Pappy. Jamesdean thank you sir. Some of you all had fathers that served and died. If you wish we would like to hear some about them. Couple of you guys know who I am talking about. I read a book by one's father. The other lost a father.

This thread makes me think of one of my best friends, Dale. My constant fishing partner for many years. He was in Nam. Marine Corp Recon. Came home after getting pinned down in a rice paddy. He took a grenade to the back and still suffers greatly from it. He moved to another state and we drifted apart. When he was feeling too much pain to get in the boat, he made me promise to just catch 1 then come home. He didn't fall too far behind that way

I grew up in a Marine Household. Dad retired in 1970 with, I'm told 30+ yrs in the Corps. I remember him coming home and pulling white glove inspections after a bad day at work. I can laugh about it now. I was the youngest of 4 siblings, and learned by their mistakes, though it didn't always help. Dad was a Radio Repairman in the Corps. I'm not sure if they moved them around different divisions when being transferred or if they stayed in the same division. I know we spent a lot of time in the high and low desert in California when he was Stateside, between Pendleton, 29 Palms and Barstow. At one time Dad had a Book in a Gray hard cover for what division he was in, but all his Pictures and memories burned in a house fire in late '77.
I can vaguely remember a few stories he would only talk about if he got really, really liberated...Stories of the Philippians, Korea, Okinawa, and Viet Nam. I lost him to cancer in December 1982. RIP Dad. GYSGT Richard "Pappy" Vernon Pierce.
