"Most of the" world is covered by water. A fisherman's job is simple: Pick out the best parts.
My main outfit for open water crappie and gill rod is a 7' Shimano Soare BB with a Shimano Stella 2000cs reel with 2-3# Maxima Ultragreen line. I use a small weighted float and my hand ties, usually 1/48 to 1/24 jigs. Never leave home without it. It catches more big fish than my bass gear. I've caught bass over 10#, 3# Crappie, 15# catfish and a big Grass carp that was close to 50# with this combo.

For real casting I like rods 6' 6" or longer paired with 2500 series Daiwa reels. My favorite has 5# braid with a 6# clear mono leader.

I use a 7 ft light action rod with a zebco omega 02. 6# sufix elite in dark green. Cast a mile.
