    Default HELP!! Lures Anonymous!

    Hello Fellow Crappie Anonymous-

    Crappie, panfishing newbie here.

So I’ve bought a ton of lures and jigs for UL fishing but I just keep on buying and buying more of them after watching YouTube anglers saying “This is THE lure you need”, “This is a game changer”, “This lure has caught 50 crappies today” and i’m off to “buy now” on Amazon, to the point where if Amazon doesn’t deliver a package everyday, the send a driver for a welfare check

Yes, I do know it’s just their way of marketing and how these anglers make some of their money, but not only do they catch fish with these lures, they catch us buyers too

How do you folks stop yourselves from getting carried away?

Maybe I should disconnect my YouTube channel

    Fish On!

Getting the Bait Monkey off your shoulder is tough. It took me a few decades to get him off me, but I'm still tempted by him

Fact of the matter IS .... they'll ALL catch fish (at one time or another), you just gotta put it in front of them and let them tell you if they're interested "right then", and if not, try something else or move to another school of fish.

Experience with what you have now will help you stop buying everything that shows up in your YT feed. Hide the credit card and just use what you have until you have a better baseline for what your fish like. I've learned that, in the waters I fish, more natural looking baits will get bit better than wild florescent colors as a general rule. I bought into some of the more colorful schemes that I read about on this very board, tried them often early on but time on the water told me to tone it down. Maybe it's the difference between white crappie and black crappie? We only have blacks here, to the best of my knowledge.
I still have a bunch with me to choose from on every trip, just in case the mood of the fish is different or water conditions make it seem like I should be using something more visible. But I haven't bought any tackle this year.
I take that back, I did buy one package of crappie magnets at an outdoor show this spring in a color that was in the neutral range I believed would be a good choice.
In short, it will be up to you to say "enough is enough" for a while.
Yes, I was talking to myself; sometimes even I have to ask for expert advice.

I'm on a fixed budget, so I have to limit what I get. I do tie jigs so there is that aspect as well. My budget for fishing tackle goes three ways and I have to watch real close, sometimes putting money aside to get what I want. The three ways are... tying material, soft plastics, and my newest hobby, rod building. More times than not I avoid the outdoor section of the department stores...When shopping....

There are 2 choices on this subject
1 Learn to ignore the "BAIT MONKEY"
    2 quit fishing
