Took my son in law out longlining this am put together a nice catch following the 7’ contour line between silver Glenn and salt springs on the west side of the lake. Roadrunners tipped with minnows got it done today.

Nice mess! I really enjoy the long lining also. When you tip the RR, are you using plastics and tipping that with a minnow or just threading the minnow on the RR like a plastic?Originally Posted by Mud

A plastic and a minnow. Just a minnow fully threaded would be good but but then you’d always be concerned that it got torn off. When using minnows I usually use a straight low profile plastic.

Is a minnow really necessary ?? I'm not dissing your rigging, just curious.
I ask, because a buddy of mine used to tip his jig/plastic with a nose hooked minnow when he was Spider Rigging ... but, once Pushing jigs came onto the scene (faster presentation), the minnows were no longer used. I would think Long Lining would be at near the same speed as Pushing, so what's the point of having a minnow on there ??
I've never "multi-pole" Long Lined as a practice, but have single pole trolled many times (with a marabou Road Runner) with success ... no minnows involved.
A "trick" I learned decades ago, but never put into practice, was to nose hook a minnow on a jighead .... upside down. The reason was to force the minnow to constantly struggle to right itself, adding a lot of "action" to the rig. Probably wouldn't work all that well at speed, but at a slow pace (like <0.5mph) they might survive long enough to be "noticed".

I longline a lot and cover lots of water from .9 to 1.2 on a big lake with a lot of roaming fish. Sometimes with minnows and sometimes not. I had to get gas in the am and they just got a batch of minnows in so I grabbed a couple dozen.
i think it helps them commit on the bite with less empty strikes. I fished 2 days in a row and caught 2 more fish with minnows if that means anything. ����*♂️
