Made a trip yesterday and waited till mid-morning to leave because the temperature was 37 degrees. Wanted to let it warm up some and not mess up the duck/deer hunters too much. The Atchafalaya River stage was supposedly at 3.4 feet at Butte LaRose, but it seemed shallower than that. Don't think I'll go back in this particular spot till the river comes up some. Took me 20 minutes to idle through what normally takes 2-3 minutes. Actually ran up on a couple of submerged stumps and had trouble getting my boat off of them.
Still ended up catching a few....not good numbers, but they are still nice-sized fish. Had a couple 13" and a couple 14". Still finding single fish suspended near submerged structure in 3.8-4' of water. They wouldn't hit the small Big Bite triple tail jig that I've been catching on, so I went to 1/64 oz Crappie Magnet Popeye hair jig (black head/chartreuse feather). Also caught on a 1/64 black/chartreuse trout magnet (nickel jig head). Water temperature ranged from 50-55 degrees while I was there. Fished all of them under a slip bobber with a small split shot above the jigs to keep the float upright.
Also, shout out to Ketchn! I remembered reading the Winter Fishing Tips thread and his advice to put on a hand-tie. That's what made me think of going to a hair-type jig!
