I don't see many big crappie in that boat. Maybe he's working to clear out a stunted pond. I've seen crappie so plentiful in a few ponds that you couldn't even catch one bigger than your hand. The pond owner didn't allow any crappie or bream to be thrown back in, but they still grew out of control. I'd like a bit more info on the picture before I condemn use of the hoop net. There might be a good reason for it.

Too many people get too worked up about LS. All these same comments were made every time there's been an improvement in electronics. Even when the old flashers went from a 60' dial to a 30' dial people hollered. 2d sonar brought out the comments. When down & side scan came out lots of folks were screaming the sky is falling. I had my concerns until I bought LS and really saw how fish react to baits. Let's just say it isn't always good.

I have an LVS32 but haven't really used it as people think for the last several months because it is pointing forward on the trolling motor while I'm pulling crank baits off the back of the boat--it has been nothing more than a glorified live sonar system showing what I'm about to pass over that I eventually see on my 2D, if I'm at the front instead of standing on the back deck looking rearward. I go back to my previous statement that the decline is caused by greed.
If I'm not at work or taking kids to their activities, you might find me on "The Rez" fishing. If not there, I could be in the garage working on my boat.

So I am not a LS fan, and wish it just wasn't there or an issue we had to deal with. BUT - I totally agree at the end of the day it's a GREED thing. And often an ego thing.

We have a lake that grows big slabs. 15 years ago it had awesome numbers - but they managed to clean it out pretty good before LS.

Then they dropped the daily crappie bag from 25 fish to 10 fish.

Here is the problem - if it's so bad you generally can't catch 10 keepers, it really is like having no limit. At the time they had proposed going to 5-5-5 for panfish - you could keep 5 crappie, 5 gills, 5 perch for a total of 15 panfish.

That is what they should have done - but too much politics.

3 guys in a boat taking 10 fish each is still a LOT of fish.

I like you post. Brings the history into focus. Give me a good Sidescan sonar and 2D sonar with the RTS or A-Scope window turned on and I'm very dangerous to Crappie populations. I tried to teach the 2D Sonar principals in the clinic I put on but for a lot of Crappie anglers its a hard task to grasp. FFS got a lot of the 16 spider rig poles at one time boats out of the water, for that I'm thankful.

….The good news is this , that won’t even make small pencil size dent in most spots to the general population of crappie ,,,,
They harvest them in herds up in Canada on the Indian reservations is what I hear , to sell to those less fortunate folks who want to eat them …..
LS does not make a small dent in the even smaller dent on that harvest …..just saying
My understanding from our fisheries folks , is a trap that might look very similar to that one , a very long net running straight off the shore ,that goes way out to a big trap ….the crappie run into it at night on their forays and then down it and then get into said trap , they are not sure if they go into the trap accidentally or intentionally to hide , but I know this bout that quite factually, the fella told me he trapped over 200 on one set and the majority were over 2 lbs !
Now if you want to know what lake , maybe you need to do like me and develop a friendship with your local fisheries folks and then you might get the inside scoop just like me … just saying

I ran across that same article. This was a biologist who was confirming the population of this specific lake has increased it's numbers.

Man, I’ll say. He is lucky Ranger Rick wasn’t in the area.! Yes, maybe there is another side to the story, especially if he is a biologist on a project.
