    Default Braid question

In the past i have not liked braid. I am playing with LS a little and i know it is easier to learn with it. I am using power pro 15-4. Today fishing in a friend's boat i had several really good hookups that ran away from me and eventually came unbuttoned. I was using a 9' SSSH. Is it possible that I had the drag too tight and the hook ripped out? I usually use 4-6 # Mr Crappie yellow.

All I use is hi vis yellow power pro braid for my crappie setups. 10 or 15lb. I doubt that is the issue. I usually have my drag down tight set hook and flip um in. Never been an issue for me.

If the "hookups" were just in the jaw/lip membrane ... it's possible to have them come unbuttoned, regardless of what you're using.

When I use my "braid outfit", I don't really set the hook by "jerking" the rod. I just keep reeling and "sweep" the rod tip away from the fish about a foot. I don't think I've had one come unbuttoned since I stopped setting the hook with a quick jerk of the rod.

Now to be fair ... the rod is a 7' Med action Bionic Blade, 10/2 PowerPro hi-viz, and I have a Road Runner tied on 99% of the time.

Shooting docks I do some hard hooksets and I drag them out into open water before that can tangle me up. Most of the time the hook is in the top part of the mouth where it is tough

Just like pappy said, it is part of the game.
Alway make sure to center plastic on jig in order to set hook into hard part of crappie mouth. I don’t do hard hook set like bass instead just small twist or sweep and reel to set hook. Set the drag enough and keep line tight, crappie like to run sideways out in open water then swim directly into you, reel them fast.
i have all theory done but still every now and then loosing fish that way. I just told myself quick release and bigger ones are in the pack.

My hookset usualy contains a fast completion of the rods parabola + a breif screech of the reel and then I hold pressure. And i am searching for bone. It was really weird setup we kinda in the structure and fishing ppen water side of the boat. When they would head to open water they would come unbuttoned. At that angle the rod would lose its bow with no reel payout. Was thinking maybe i had my drag to tight for braid.

    Thanks for yalls help

Of course Sir CrappiePappy is spot on. A gentle twitch of the rod tip is sufficient to bury the hook. As far as the fight after the hookset I was in on to PowerPro when it was in development. I knew one of the Reps, was given quite a bit of the line for saltwater use. It took me a morning to get use to not setting the hook like fishing with Mono. When these big Slabs I catch makes a run I point the rod tip to them to compensate for the drag setting. I don't like a drag doing my angling work. Today vertical jig fishing PowerPro 8Slick 8# test in Aqua is the only way I go. The line is the diameter of 1-2 pound test, super fine, very strong too I use a wooden dowel (several are cut and laying about in my boats) to wrap the line around to pull snags loose with. The 8# seems to take 15 pounds to break. My personal trick is to buy wedge tip black sharpie pens and black the last 3ft of my line before leaving to go fishing. You can refresh your coating in the boat if you break off above the darkened line but give it a minute to dry before continuing to fish. I personally have never broken PowerPro 8Slick anywhere but the knot. Best of Luck

Saturday i thought I broke the 15/4. When i got ready to rety I noticed part of the jig hook was still in the knot.

Tying a Palomar Knot with the real fine lines I sometimes get the loop over the jig caught on the eyelet shank when tightening the knot. I really have to watch on the chinch up that I have the loop correctly positioned. I use the Uni Knot mostly because of that. To me the Palomar is a better Braid knot.

not sure about if braid rips out lips more than mono is me , it would seem reasonable to me that the drag setting is inconsequential with crappie for the most part if you use braid .
this part is for sure though ....
the longer you "play" a crappie on your hook in the water , the more likely that crappie will stay in the water , this part is for sure fact .
