Thread: Wind speed

20+ is usually my cutoff. If 15 was the cutoff, I wouldn't get to fish much. I will go over 20 sometimes and have had success, but I need to know I am somewhat sheltered when I get where I am going.

Id say a lot depends on what type of boat you have, My new 20ft aluminum Vexus is way better then the 17.5ft aluminum Tracker I had. I like trolling or pushing jigs with a drift soak holding me back.

It's not only the fishing to consider, but the ramp too. There are a few ramps here that are dangerous if the wind is coming from the wrong direction.

My home lake is that way on all but 1 ramp. Very frustrating.

Since I fish out of a solo canoe even 10 mph can be really aggravating. On smaller sheltered lakes I can tolerate 10 mph. But if I am on a more open lake I don't like much of a breeze at all. No matter which direction it is coming from it can make paddling and trying to position myself aggravating. Maybe a younger more skilled paddler could handle more wind. Don't know.

As long as I can find a launch ramp that is safe I use an AP named Windy that is a great tool to use to find areas to fish that are sheltered from the wind. You source where you are on the map and enlarge until is shows the wind direction on the lake you’re fishing. it’s live time so it’s accurate throughout the day if conditions change. It saves a lot of time and makes the day a safe and good experience. Hope this helps to put you on the lake a few more days!

yep ruined a really nice boat one time on a white capping ramp , punched a hole thru the hull that just got worse after every patch ......the boat was jumping so high in them waves it came up and then slammed down on the trailer .....bad day for sure

One of the nicest ramps on Ky Lake was built open to the prevailing SW wind. Any wind with west in the forecast keeps me away from the Jonathan Creek public ramp at Hwy 68.

15mph forecast winds and my guide trips are cancelled.
