    Default Mainly fly fishing trip

Arrived at Lake McIntosh this morning around eleven, it’s overcast , a little windy , but the biggest issue was , people.
One spot was open on the left side of the dock . I counted thirteen people fishing from where I was casting . The most I’ve seen there before .
I caught two small gills and a small shellcracker before a teenager tossed a large bass bait over the small little spot where I’d just caught my shellcracker.
Time to go try to find a spot without so many people.
I drove to my creek spot at the old mill , about ten minutes away .
When I got there , there was only a single car , but I didn’t see anyone around. Later I found a small 10” bass on a stringer tied to a log . Never saw anyone around the creek area .
I got to casting my 6’ St Croix Imperial flyrod with a Redington Zero reel .
I caught a couple of redbreast before moving close to the dam .
There’s a small pool on the left side of the dam where I caught six fish , four or five species, out of that tiny pool .
I caught redbreast , bass, bluegills, a small shellcracker, and an unidentified, cool looking fish .
This is the same pool where I’ve caught spotted sunfish out of before , but this one looks more like a flier . But I’ve never caught fliers this far north .
I love fishing the creek , I’m always amazed at the colors of the creek fish .
I also took my newest rod , a second 4’10” Major Craft Glass paired with a Shimano Soare XR500spg and 2# Floroclear.
I took the spinner to see if I could cast the same streamer I was casting on the flyrod . A size 12 Mustad with a tiny 3mm Tungsten bead .
Even with the light weight jig I was able to cast 15-20’ , enough to catch three more fish before heading home about 1:30 .
I’m going to post the strange fish in a post after this , so if anyone knows what it is , let me know .

What is this is fish ?
    I’m thinking it’s a flier .
If not a flier , it has to be some kind of hybrid.

Good job. Nice catches. I’d have to find a place less crowded too. Not much for crowds and when I’m fishing I prefer to hear nature not other people.

Checking pictures on the net , I’m pretty sure the mystery fish is a flier . But according to what the state Fisheries Department put up , it shouldn’t have been where it was .
    Here’s what I found :

“ Habitat: Sluggish lowland habitats such as swamps, bayous and other weedy water. Often one of the most common recreational fish in very acidic waterbodies, such as the Okefenokee Swamp. Rarely found in flowing waters.”

And it was definitely in flowing waters .
I’m not complaining, I love catching odd fish .
This is only the second flier I’ve ever caught .
I was around 10 or eleven when I caught my last one , over sixty years ago . But I remember it like it was yesterday.
Caught out of pond in South Georgia while my family and I was with my grandfather on my mother’s side .
I caught it with a bobber and hook with worms . Yep , at one time I used live bait . LOL !

Very nice colors on all those fish. That doesn’t look like what I’ve been told are fliers down here, but I’m not sure of that. That looks like a crappie cross breed from the fin size and placement. His mouth looks like a crappie also but it’s closed. Interesting. If what I catch aren’t fliers, now I gotta figure out what they is.

OMG, imagine if that’s a crappie/cracker cross? Fins like that and attitude of a cracker. Be tough to land!

I also caught two tiny crappie out of that same hole .
Definitely one I’ll be keeping a picture of .

I've never seen a fish that looks like that. Certainly has characteristics of a flier and crappie but don't think they hybridize. Cool fish, I'm going with a Flier.
