Default How Hot is Too Hot

For wheel hubs that is How Hot is Too Hot. I replaced the ancient hubs on my homemade trailer this weekend. Learned a lot doing it, too. They were roaring and I knew it was time. Not bad considering they have never been replaced! 1960s homemade trailer y’all!

I packed em real good and installed castle nut & cotter pin finger tight. Naturally, it was time to put some miles on em. After a drive around the block confirming the noise was gone (hooray!) I had a congratulatory Coors. Next day, Brazos River on north end of Whitney. 1 hour away at 60 mph. When I got home, I felt the hubs. They were warm, but not what I’d call hot. Is that normal?

Tires felt fine. I assume some temp in them is okay. What have been your experiences with hubs and temp? If I’m not boiling grease out and they’re quiet I’m fine right? Haha How Hot is Too Hot

    God bless,

They gonna be warm at 60 MPH…and they gonna be almost too hot to touch at 70 MPH. In the summer when driving the interstate at 70…the wheel on the sun side of the road will get too hot to touch. The wheel on the shade side will just be hot. I am religious about taking care of wheel bearings and I have never had an issue. I put about 18 thousand miles a year on my trailer at interstate speeds. Never had an issue in 7 years. I sold my boat last month and the guy that bought it drove 2400 miles to get it and towed it back with no issues at all. I know a lot of folks who have had issues…and everyone of them never did any maintenance at all on their bearings. I think you’ll be fine.

    Regards

used to run a small tire trailer back when all over the place , lots of factors like stated can cause them to be warm , hot to the touch isnt a good thing in most cases ,but it can occur even when everything is in good shape .

They will be warm. Especially with small wheels and tires like those, the smaller they are, the faster the hub is turning.

Appreciate everyone’s response. Maybe I’ll put some bearing buddies on at some point.

try to find radials, not sure if possible , BUT if its a 4 hole 14 , you can get adapters/hubs to make it a 5 hole 15 and THEN you can find a pair of cheap radials ,,,,,just saying
