What makes a jig work? : depends on lure material, shape and action.
Color and size? : no hard & set rules.
Eyes or no eyes? : an eye is part of lure contrast. Fish don't have a clue what a lure eye is.
Special hook, or style of head? : I only use unpainted ball heads with round bend hooks.
My question is because my jigs evolved to a different look. With others who sell, they follow the Chenille standard (?), mostly.
Does my jig style (be honest) have such a different appearance, that it's unlikely to be a fish catcher? : different looking is of no concern to fish striking. Lure action is most critical and your hair jigs have as much potential as any other.
