Thanks everyone for the kind remarks!

@rojo - I use a "the bait pump" you can get them online. I fill them with crappie nibbles and inject those into the hollow end of tube. The sent stays longer.

@ Ken - yes my 5000 plus catch does not mean I kept them. No way. My wife would kill me if I brought home what I catch each day. Even today I caught another 50 big ones on north end of shenango while the hunters were out. I had the whole lake to myself. See new pic below.

@ VaCrappieMan - I will get one up soon.

After doing some thinking I would be lucky to catch more than 500 this year. I may have to keep count next year out of curiosity

If my wife had a sister she would be worth a million dollars in our fishing community....

My wife has filleted thousands of fish for me over the last 30 years. She is super fast and you could read a newspaper threw the dorsal aspect when she is done. Very little waste.

But she's on to my praise...lol Shes tells me I am good at taking out the trash, so I do that well

You're pulling all those fish over the side of a 10' plastic boat??!!

Where is the Livescope? What about the boxes and boxes of the latest newfangled lures in every color imaginable? Where are the power poles, the 200hp motor, the $70,000 bass boat that I've been led to believe is absolutely critical to the sport of crappie fishing??? Surely all those advertisers didn't LIE to me????

Seriously though, thank you for this post. What a great reminder that you can catch them like crazy with minimal equipment. 5,000 crappie on 3 different colors of tube jigs blows my mind.

You make a good point Doug. I used to have big powerful boats with the latest everything. And I got so tired of all the maintenance and expense. So did my wife.

So one day I sold it all and just shore fished for a couple of years. And hitched rides with others.

Then the weeds from all the zebra muscles came to North East Ohio, and I was once again needing to get out just past the shoreline.

So I convinced my wife I needed a boat again. But she said it all must be under $5000.00. That was our fishing budget.

So after a lot of research, I got me a fat mans kayak (plastic bath tub boat) with a good trolling motor (when the gps is working).

It will not flip, so I feel safe even when big wakes come by me. I can go a whopping 2.5 MPH.

A simple depth finder with water temperature and good knowledge of crappie behavior is all that I had to get me by now.

However, an amazing thing happened. Because I go so slow, I have found an incredible amount of habitat I did not know about on our lakes.

Going 50 mph to get to honey holes, I would miss so much. But, because of its speed limitations I decided to slow troll (.32 mph) all the lakes, and would find group after group of crappie that other boaters would just blow by.

Because the boat is small, I take a tiny tacklebox and a 5 lb dumbbell' as an anchor. If I keep fish I use a sams club bag with a frozen bottle to keep them.

I use 2 poles, and keep a few extra batteries for night stalking.

The boat is so quite I can sneak right over a brushpile at night and jig 3 to 4 feet next to / below the boat over the pile. I have had crappie hit the jig just inches from my sidewall at night.

My stern light is close to the water and attracts the crappie right to me. The baitfish and crappie follow me around. Some nights I get plum warn out after 6 hours of non stop action.

Fish only spook when I drop a large fish on the plastic floor.

This little boat opened up a new world to me. A quite one, under the stars of heaven. Morning sunrise with no other boats around is my favorite. If the coffee stays warm its even better

The pic below is from this morning.

Going this route has made me a better fisherman. I am more patient. Less stressed. I can launch anywhere, even in 6 inches of water. And my lithium battery lasts for days.

LOL Chuck. I am still green at this. I have old timers that would out fish me every time we went out. The hardest part for me was learning how to detect jig bites without the thump.
Now, after years of practice I see what those older gentleman were holding back from me.

    Reasons to set the hook:

    1) Countdown after casting 1/16 jig 30 feet from boat and jig stops falling before reaching bottom
    2) Line goes limp
    3) Line pops
    4) Line moves transversely
    5) Tiny tick forward
    6) Line loads before reaching bottom
    7) Thump

At night it is more difficult to jig. Vertical or bobber is my go to. And UV light lights up my 6 lbs hi vis mono like a rope.

I use dark tubes at night and next week I am going to try gulp alive minnows under lighted bobbers while trolling slowly. Got a friend who swears by them.

Crappie hit jigs great at night as long as the bait is moving. I hate minnows and will not use them unless ice just comes off. Still hate them
