What's the shortest distance from top hook to bottom hook you use on a double rig? And at what depth do you abandoned the double rig and go to single rig?

I hate double rigs. And I absolutely love spider rigging shallow water! I refer it as hand to hand combat!! Down and dirty in the trenches!!

We saw some EXPLOSIONS last spring on Grenada pushing fast in shallow water, no missing. Moving .8 with a 1/2 oz egg sinker about 8 inches about a 1/4oz Road Runner with a big ole minner on it. Fish were real scattered. Saw a 2.75 hit, it was freaking awesome, better that top water green carp fishing.

In less than 6 ft I just go to single. Since I use snaps on 90% of my drops I'll just Thake hook off top and just keep fishing. No need to change out rigs.

I'll double rig in 3' of water. 12" to first bait. 12" to second, 12" to lead. Sometimes it gets shallower and I run the top bait just barely in the water. It's a reaction bite all the way. Not worried about being subtle.
In the spring I don't consider changing to double rigs until I get out to 8 ft or so. Just following the fish in and out will make you pull your hair out fishing a double hook rig. I don't pass up any cover I go by with that single jig. Any other time of the year I'm fishing a double rig until i can see my top bait and the bottom bait is on the ground.
