That's exactly what we encountered down in Tenn ... as far as a few thumping the jig, while others just seemed to grab it and sit still ("just got heavy").
When we used to fish Taylorsville in Nov (cold/windy enough for heavy clothing), back when we tight lined minnows ... there wasn't a "hit" (rod tip bounce, then pulled down) as much as there was simply the line moving off to one side. Then in later years, casting jigs from the bank over a downed tree, in Dec & Jan, we got the same "thump" we were used to in much warmer water.
... just goes to show that them Crappies can be finicky, tricky, or just plain ornery when they want to be.
