My high frequency hearing loss was the result of tank and artillery fire. If I meet an ambulance or other emergency vehicle, I cover my left ear. Just living with it.

"G", I have the same high pitch loss, like crickets and small birds. Most everything else is not too bad. Tuning high pitch teletype signals as a radioman and screaming jets from flight decks didn't help. Constant ringing in the ears I've gotten used to so don't pay it much attention. Can still hear a car drive up the driveway on the gravel and foot steps in the woods so I will stay aid free for the time being. Most of my friends have aids and I hear all their complaints. Not looking forward to dealing with them in the future. Worst problem I have is when the wife tells me about some woman's boots and I misunderstand, thinking she said boobs. I look at her kinda funny when that happens.

I received my hearing aids from the Veterans Administration about a week ago. So far, they have been great. I'm hearing little sounds and noises I had not heard in years. Mine are the Starkey Halo 2. They fit behind the ear and have a tube that goes into the ear canal. I can control them with the iPhone and when a call comes in, it goes directly from the iPhone to the hearing aids. I wish I had gotten them years ago.
I also got mine from the VA but they are ReSounds. Like yours mine are controlled by an app on my IPhone and are capable of sending all the audio from the phone trough the HAs. I however changed mine to NOT talk through the HAs because there was a considerable delay from the time I answered the phone and the audio from the phone. The delay was only just after I answered an incoming call, and it was long enough that I did not get the first thing the other party said.
My phone is now synced through the radio in my new truck and I love being able to answer the phone with the buttons on my steering wheel.

G - if you were in the Navy you are eligible to get your HAs (when you decide you want to try again) from the VA. Find your local office for the DAV and have them help you get them through the VA. It is not hard, just complicated. Another benefit is that all your batteries, ear-tubes and rest are free.
When I got mine they gave me the hearing test and checked my Military Health Records and said that was a difference between the test when I went in and when I got out, making my hearing loss service connected. I also told them I have tinnitus, which I do. Here is the weird part - I go 0% disability for the hearing loss and 10% for the tinnitus! If I were not drawing full military retirement (20 years worth) I would receive about $168 a month for the 10% disability.

I tried to go through the VA directly and only got confused. Go to the DAV - the counselor there talked me through the process on-line. Start to finish took about two months. I filled out the form on-line and then waited about 2 weeks before they called me to make the first eval appointment. About 2 weeks after that they called and said to come get my HAs. I called them after I had them about 2 weeks to get them adjusted and have not had to go back yet. The DAV does not charge to help and you do not have to be a member. There are other organizations that offer the same service but I used the DAV because the office is one town over and I know the guy as he is my wife's cousin's husband.
