I bought pinstripe vinyl tape off ebay and did the same except every 2'.....I will not do the same to my next new rods as it is nothing but a pain raising my rods straight up to mark distance....IMO.....If you like doing that you are different than me...Everybody is a bit different.

Do you just guess how deep you are fishing?

Nope... You can just make a "pull" with your drag set light enough from the reel towards the tip to drag out whatever depth you want to fish accurately.Once you measure the distance from the reel to the first eye lit of the rod.Make however many pulls you need to get the depth you want...For me at least it is a lot easier than holding the rod straight up.....The "pulls" method is for less than 8 or 10 feet.Over that I use the rod as it is faster...

I do the same. I marked a 1 foot and 2 foot spot from the reel on my rods with some bright yellow toe nail polish I found at Walmart. Was a little strange buying it but works better than tape in my opinion. Makes it really easy to pull off 1' or 2' of line accurately. Plus line doesn't snag on it like the tape. How I did it: I measured the spots on the rod from the reel and them put two pieces of blue painters tape on each side of spot. Left about 3/16" in between tape to use the polish. Put two coats on each of the 3/16 spots. Works good.

Just a suggestion on the pinstripe tape....A couple wraps of tape then use 2-3 coats of clear vinyl lure and jig finish to 1)help hold tape on and 2)keep your line from catching on the edge of the tape........Just got another set of rods---Gonna do it a bit different....16' rods with tape marks only at 8,10,and 12 feet....Everybody is a bit different--I do not feel the need to mark my "pulls" distance...

Thanks for the tip man. I have some clear paint. Do you think that will work?

It would depend on what kind if paint it is.The vinyl pinstripe tape matches with vinyl lure and jig finish.....vinyl on vinyl....Before the days of powder paint I would hand paint jigs so I already had the vinyl lure and jig finish.Quite a few places sell it...A problem could come up if your paint is a lacquer type that could "eat" the vinyl tape. You could try a test first off your rod to see if they are compatible . At Bass pro ,Do-it,or Cabela's a 1 oz bottle of vinyl lure and jig finish is about $4 if your paint does not work.Myself--?--I feel better about putting vinyl on vinyl to avoid any problems (my 2 cents)

Make zero sense to me but the color code for clear gloss is NS ?????
I would bet Academy carries "Vinyl Lure and Jig finish"
