There are exceptions to all rules, but for year round, day in day out, minnows will outfish jigs, spider rigging. I'd estimate minnows to outfish strait jigs 8-9 times out of ten throughout the year. I think I'd trap/catch my own before I went without.

Crankbaits, and long lining are a little different. That's more of a reaction bite a lot of the time, not a hungry bite.

$17.20/pound at Lakeway in Grenada. Minnows passed gas for the biggest expense this year... I still buy em every weekend.

Well for a guy that might fish once a month I can see him paying that price, but for guys that fish several times a week, that would start adding up fast. I'd have to have a place with air condition inside to keep the left overs. I know what my wife would say.....it's me or the minnow's big boy... lol

Spot on, only time I don't fish minners is when I'm cranking. Most of the time fishing straight minners too.

2-3 days a week from mid February to mid November. I buy 2 pounds on average every week. Some more, some less depending on where we are fishing. I have bought as many as 6 pounds in a 3 day weekend. I do have a minnow vat that I save what I don't use, but they get hard for me to keep this time of year. I lose 8-12 minnows a day in the summer. 1-2 when temps are cooler. I don't have a refrigeration unit, and it's out in my shop. Change water every couple days when it's hot, once a week when it's cool. I've been trying to come up on a way to cool them. Ice bottles work, but they play out way before I get home from work, and I can't come home at lunch...

Awesome, if I remember correctly you posted in the live bait forum about buying and old milk cooler from a school, made of stainless? You gonna be in high cotton with that setup along with the refrigeration on it. Curious to see how it works out, I will have to start looking at options, been saying I was gonna keep my own minners for years now. Between me and my buddy, we could put it to very good use and save money and trips to the bait shop as well. Noting worse than burning daylight waiting on a shop to open.
