He let me know real quick HE was fishing that area and didn't appreciate me being near his markers. I ignored him and went on about my trolling, some of it between markers that were dozens of yards away from his boat. In his pea-sized brain, I was encroaching on HIS area.
I have seen and done the same thing in Indiana. What the heck makes a guy think he can lock up a whole point or area for over a 100 yds or more on public water?

Try ice fishing, you drill 6 holes, all within twenty ft of you and someone decides to occupy some of them while you are sitting at them.......maybe,just maybe I might consider that my spot.I do my very best to keep a distance from anyone anchored, but if they are slowly drifting and casting,I fish where I want.
Just recently,I endured an outright deluge of rain, once it ended,I anchored deep in a log jam,and began catching crappie.Along came a boat with two dudes, they were a bit peeved, seems they were fishing the same spot, but rushed back to the landing to get out of the rain.I had no idea they were previously there, and paid them no heed when they grumbled loud enough for me to hear.
They actually anchored next to me,and attempted to outwait me.........( I have much patience when I need to ),after a 1/2 hr,they motored off into the sunset, giving me their secret fishing spot.

I do the same whether by myself or with clients. I think it's just good policy. I just don't want to talk to the doofus who runs within 20 yards of my transom when I've got 10 cranks in the water to ask what kind of fish I'm trying to catch. Wife and I had that happen a couple of years ago. He got a welcome he didn't appreciate.

After I let off some steam, I asked the guy who pushed the boat just what the @#&^&%$$ he thought he was doing touching my boat. He told me that was his spot and he was going to fish there.

Since the sauger bite was over after daylight and we were ready to trailer the boat, I just told him what a sorry POS he was and left. If they hadn't been so close to the bank, I probably would have expressed my displeasure in a way that would have taken them a while to dry out.

Don't touch my wife, my kids, or my boat!!!
Wow, now that is extreme. I hate to think what I would have done if that had happened to me because I would have been seriously PO'd. You did the right thing, I think, in not letting it escalate because that is the way someone gets hurt. I think I would have taken a picture of his boat registration and him and called a Ranger or water patrol and reported him. I think they would have been interested and paid him a call to straighten him out at the least before he did it to someone else and it did escalate.

If the problem gets to be consistent I have found a trick that works real well for me. My home state laws allows a person to wear their concealed weapon in plain site if they have the proper permit. Depending on where I am fishing I just wear a hip holster where all can see and I don't have any problems. Every one says yes sir and no sir and are very polite. I wouldn't shoot anyone over fishing but the visual does produce results.

This is an element of any confrontation we all hope to avoid. I carry a stainless revolver when fly-fishing the stocked trout stream a few counties east of me, mainly for snakes, with the first three rounds in the cylinder being Rat/Snake shot. While wading down-stream I encountered two "gentlemen" riding four-wheelers up-stream. The pistol was prominently displayed clipped into the top of my life-vest, and as you mentioned the conversation was VERY polite from the beginning. They both thought my suggestion of them getting out of the stream and continuing their trek on dry ground was a good one.

I hope every situation of someone claiming "my spot" can be handled pleasantly, but understand that there are some who do not hold the same opinion of the situation as most who have posted here.

I think the suggestion earlier of taking a cell-phone picture of the boat registration numbers and letting the authorities handle any differences is a good one.

Public means Public. I am a troll person mostly, moving along and enjoying my day. Or trying to.
