Given Crappypappy's picture...where the base of the mouth extends to/beyond the eye, and the black line under the eye are another clue. Thanks for sharing. At least I got the right hand and left shoe correct.

The mouth was slightly skinned where it was trying to get out of the trap.. he/she will be released tomorrow after more pictures are taken of fins.

Crappiepappy my be right I'm no expert on this group of fish. I can tell you they love crappie jigs. I catch them a west point a lot. I do know the chain pickrel get to 3lbs because I've caught one that size myself.

What ever it is next time lip it like a bass, lol. Got my buddy years ago one night bass fishing, he got a 5 pound walleye to the boat and never seen one and I told him to lip it like a bass, needless to say the trip was over to attend to his tore to pieces thumb, lol.

Never seeing this type of fish before that was the first thing I did was check the mouth and yeah I know what you mean by lipping it. For its size it definitely did have some very sharp teeth.

Im going to go with this being a grass pickerel being that I do not see any red on the fins.

Chain or grass pickerel...I have actually caught 3 chain pickerel on 3 consecutive casts a couple of years ago. I had to post on here also to find out what they were.

Doesn't appear that you are actually much of a buddy at all if you would do that to someone. Just saying....

There were some in Lake Lady Ann (now Sun Lake) in Madison years ago. I caught one in Orange Lake in Florida that was 6 pounds!!!!! At the time the WR was over 9#.

Always called them a "jack". Creeks in NW Florida are full of them. Never caught one in Alabama
