I would agree with the above post, but I would also play with the blue palette and the red one in different situations. You will have to adjust the sensitivity differently for each palette color though. Try to get the screen pretty dark (with sensitivity adjustments) so you don't get the BRIGHT highlights in the middle. You will notice more details. But sometimes you just have to play with it. I use 455, 100% of the time.

I use 2d mostly. I turn on the fish ID. In my opinion, fish ID is the best feature and sonar has. It keeps my wife interest (shes believes) and keeps her from harping bout raking leaves.
I use grayscale on bright sunny days and blue on overcast days and blue at night. Sensitivity auto-6, 800 Khz. Contrast per sun brightness. Noise and surface clutter is on Low. This is all I recall. from use. I save all my settings to memory. I can recall the settings from internal memory anytime ( in case things get hosed).
