Hard current and cold water aren't a good combo on KY or Barkley. Pre-spawn get on the deep flats, set up to spider rig, and cover a bunch of water.

I have fished KY lake several times in the past. Had some good results but more often than not, it was tough for me, so I am asking for a little advice. We always seem to schedule our trips just before the spawn (like in early April). I have also generally fished near Bear Creek in 10 to 15 fow or Jonathan Creek in 5 to 10 fow. Since there is very little timber left in that lake, I have found it hard to locate fish. If my luck holds true to form and I am too early for the spawn, should I try spider rigging in the old creek channels rather than search for sunken brush or other structure? Any advice is welcome. BTW, the area, scenery and hospitality has always been great, I would just like to catch a few more fish.
Also, has anyone else noticed that the fishing was tougher when the lake level was dropping? Any suggestions for that?

Every spring is different. Fronts, water levels, current, pressure, water clarity, and water temps can make or break a trip. Be prepared for multiple presentations and techniques, use your electronics and you should catch fish.
Also, look up some of our site supporting guides, and go out one day with them to gather your intel and get your feet wet!

had inconsistant results on KY lake fishing johnathan creek and other areas, always seemed like a cold front would blown in and everyone there would say man you should have been her a couple days before! which really ticks you off. didn't have good electronics so we were fishing wherever.
I'm in the same boat. We normally come down the 2nd week of April and hire a guide to get us started. This year coming down the 1st week, the guide I use already is booked for the entire month of April. I'm looking for a guide that fishes blood since we're staying at Paradise resort.
If you cast it they will come.
I don't fish Kentucky Lake but fish Barkley, the sister lake, I live on the lake and April can be a tough month based on many factors, yes, one day may be great, then the next not so good. Cold Fronts, High Water, Low Water, Winds, who knows during April. I just think it is the luck of the draw when trying to predict weather patterns and lake conditions around here. He has good advice "Pre-spawn get on the deep flats, set up to spider rig, and cover a bunch of water". All I can suggest is sometimes you need to get out of your comfort zone and explore places which may not see as much fishing pressure, I know there is a ton of structure out here, some state spots, but mostly dropped by locals which hold fish most of the year or at least at some time and point during the Crappie prime season. It is nearly impossible to hide structure with todays electronics. I think I would explore other areas than the heavily fished areas such as blood or Johnathan Creek. My neighbor who fishes exclusively Crappie have been slaying them on Kentucky Lake and it is not at one of the popular bays. Good Luck.

Many thanks to all that responded. I think I have been concentrating too much on structure and points and need to explore more what I used to call open water. I have better electronics than I used to have and need to use it more.
Fall or winter is the best time, stable weather usually, spring fish can be a pain sometimes
