It needs to be mounted as close to the transducer as possible. That way when your marking a way point it is going to be in the closest proximity to your reading. The farther away from ducer the larger your search area is going to be when you go back to find it. Also you need to get a cheap hand held compass and check your mounting location for magnetism. It needs to be mounted in a area with the least amount of magnetism so as not to affect your readings. Maybe Rickie will see this and can give you a better understanding or explain nation than mine.

He is not talking about a GPS puck. Its a heading sensor for the trolling motor for the spot lock and other features. I would talk to minn-kota or its probably in the instructions.

Thanks Wilbur, Your 100%right. I’ve downloaded the manual and already talked with Minnkota. Since it’s a new product there is not much info on it. If I mount it by the transducer I’ll be 20 ft. off the spot. I normally wouldn’t be concerned about it be I’ll be taking a trip to Fl. the 1st. of Jan. Be nice to have it working properly. Any advice is really appreciated.

I don't recall any external GPS compatibility with Ulterra ...

Isn't the GPS internal with any Minn Kota GPS capable TM ...??

Rickie, I'm 70 and have CRS...confused my way of life. This is new tech for 2017 and comes with the ulterra. It is for the enhanced spotlock. It’s Bluetooth and only has a power cord. I’m Sort of hoping that someone with a smaller unit has already installed and used it. The unit I’ve got ordered is the only one not on the market yet. More power and Stoplock is a big reason for the upgrade. I hope ilink will be a benefit also.

The installation instructions indicate this heading sensor does not have GPS function = only the heading sensor magnetic compass ... so mounting close to any xducer is irrelevant ...



You should test the preferred mounting area with a handheld compass for magnetic interference ...

Doug shows how to test for magnetic interference here ... (video is for installing AS GPS HS antenna for the HB unit but testing for magnetic interference would be the same) ...

The heading sensor is just a compass. As long as you mount it with the arrow parallel with the keel of the boat, you can mount it anywhere you can get Bluetooth to the head.
