Question/opinions on longline setup
Normally I fish alone I run 8-12 rods out back and sides...But on occasion a friend goes with me and I put him fishing out the back and I take the front in part due to the fact I cannot see the tm from the back which makes heading adjustments challenging..
Any way I am thinking about trying either trolling sinkers or those new offshore tadpoles to drastically reduce the amount of line put out from the front rods ( I run 3 out each side up front )
Have any of you tried a similar setup?

I am setup now to have both fisherman fishing out of the back with a double seat. When I pulled from the front while another was pulling from the back I would add a little weight to the front rods so the jig would get down to the depth with less line out. It work best with split shots. I'm thinking I used 7 but maybe smaller.

I've used the sinkers and a short leader quite a bit. My experience is that they are not always as productive as the rods in the back, BUT at other times they will outperform the back rods. I've also just moved the side rods (8, 10 and 12') from my spread up to the front. It works fine for me, but it does increase your turning radius some. To me, it's more enjoyable to fish side by side in the rear if your boat is wide enough.

I appreciate the feedback...unfortunately my boat can't really be set up for a double seat on the back deck... Front is set up for double seat for spider rigging although I rarely spider rig.
Those Tadpoles are like 7.50 each so just trying to get a little info on their use....

I believe farther away from the boat is better so if youre wanting to reduce the amount of line I'd go with a splitshot and cast a little shorter distance. When two fish from my boat the back is set up with six 6' rods and the front is set up with a 10', 12', and 14' rod on each side. I fish from the front in this situation. As long as my partner can do a "decent" cast we dont have any problems tangling. When fishing alone it's 14 rods all out the back fishing singles. If I go to doubles per rod it's 8 rods out the back. I still havent decided which setup is the most productive though.

You will be surprised how deep a 1/8th or a 1/4th oz jig head will go you might want to try some heavier jig heads to see how it works for ya ! I use 10'-12'-14' rods out each side when someone is with me on the back and if I'm not making a lot of turns.if making a lot of turns I use heavier jigs with less line.

I have a center console set up for striper/crappie fishing. For long lining, We just pick a side. Use longer rods at front. Shorter at back/middle. Works well as long as you make big slow turns. If in tight quarters, just run less line out.
My buddy Stanley has a Carolina Skiff. When fishing on his boat, he takes the front, guest takes the back. Again longer rods at front/sides, and shorter stubby rods at the back/middle. Down rods with minners usually off front/sides.
Just works well well for our rigs. And it's working well right now hint hint.

Here's the way an old Ga. boy does it. I use 12 16' poles out front and if someone is with me , they have 12 16' poles out the back. I use a 3/4 oz weight about 24 inches above my bait or jig. Doing this allows me to troll anywhere from 0-1.2 mph. You get about 2-3 ft of rise of your bait according to how fast you troll and the weight of your jig. I prefer to troll at .8 -.9 mph. Fishing this way allows me to go anywhere I want to fish. I can troll any cove I want. I can stop and turn around on a dime if I want. Run over a school of fish and slow down or speed up to trigger a bite. The possibilities are endless. Fishing this way takes all the guess work out of how deep you are, how far you have to cast to get to a desired depth, what speed you have to run to get the jig at the depth you want, how wide a turn you have to make and how fast you have to speed up to make the turn. It's a very simple way to "longline" but with a short line. Over the years the only disadvantage I have found fishing this way is if the water is choppy, you get a lot of bounce of your rod tips that are on the front of the boat. The back rods do better in choppy water. Other than that, that is the only disadvantage I have found. But really....What does an old Ga. boy know about fishing anyway..
