    Default Camping Question

This question ain't Fishin related but I'm hoping someone knows the law on this.

At Lake Thunderbird does private property extend all the way down to the waters edge or is there like some kind of easement or something that the public has access to?

I'm asking because last Saturday night I was out late fishing and i saw some boaters pull up at some random spot on the bank out in the middle of nowhere, no houses or anything around. the beached their boat and setup camp for the night. No one bothered them at all.

My son was with me and he saw this and was like "DAD, I don't have to sleep in the boat when I get tired of fishing anymore I can camp on shore, while you continue fishing". I told him I didn't think that was the case but I would try to find out.

So does anyone know if what I saw them other boaters doin is legal or not. I don't want my son to get a trespassing ticket or make some land owner angry.

I've camped in random spots up on Little River many times and have never has any issues or been told that I'm not allowed to do so. I've seen others do the same. You can certainly call the park office and ask, but IMO if you're clean and considerate (as I'm sure you and your son would be) then I don't expect you'd run in to any problems.

Looking at Google Maps (for whatever it's worth), it looks like there are certain areas of shoreline that are within park limits (including much of Little River) and other areas that aren't. Maybe target the areas that are clearly within the park boundaries?

Anyway, sorry I couldn't give a definitive answer, but there's my 2 cents.

Those lightly shaded green areas on Google maps. Is that park land?

If it is a Corp of engineers lake all of them have a public shoreline it extends up to the flood plain. From the water you can land your boat anywhere even if there is private land behind it.

I was thinking about doing the same thing on Fort Gibson and making a basic camp up on the river.

    Default Camping Question

    Thunderbird is a COE lake.
Here is a link that gives pool levels in elevation.

You can call the office at thunderbird to get camping information, or use the link below.

Looks like Thunderbird was built by U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and I found the info off of the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife. I would call the Corps of Engineers they could help you out and I have found them to be helpful.

I called them about putting out brush piles on Fort Gibson, they said cut all the cedars you want just make sure they sink and do not interfere with navigation. There is plenty of dead fall on the shores right now that I want to drag into the water and sink, first big flood comes and that stuff will be floating in the lake. If some busy body comes up and tries to tell me I can't nothing better than to tell them "I have called the Corps and I have permission to do it".

"Federal Lakes are large reservoirs constructed for multiple purposes including flood control, water supply, irrigation, hydropower, navigation, recreation and fish and wildlife. Such lakes may be operated and controlled by either the US Army Corps of Engineers (918/669-7339) or the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (405/231-4515)."

Dont bother trying to sink dried ceder trees, they look great but it takes a TON of weight to sink them. I've tied mass amounts of rock to them, towed them out with the boat only to watch them float . Ive never tried to sink other dried trees, but I would assume its the same or nearly the same.
