    Default PWM Basics Please

Alright electrical gurus who can give me a basic how to with this. Pulse Width Modulation? Right now I have a 5 speed motor guide and on calm days it's impossible to keep a .2-.3 click without having to just constantly bumping, is there something that can be installed to control the power to the trolling motor?

If motor guide is using PWM (pulsed DC) to control motor speed then they are just varying the duty cycle to the motor. More on than off to increase speed. You could probably replace 5 speed switch with variable resister or rheostat.

This link gives a pretty good overview of PWM. Pulse Width Modulation Used for Motor Control

I googled "motor guide PWM speed control" and quite few solutions to what you want to do came up. Looks like a few on CDC have solved same problem before.

RK1, ur pretty much stuck with what u have. With pwm full on is full on. Some efficiency is lost in the pure dc to pwm process. This is an active process so no large amounts of heat is produced at low speeds as would happen with a rheostat which is a passive brute force type of control. Pwm or some derivative of pwm is still the most efficient way to go. Even in large three phase motors.

Depending on TM voltage, watch ebay for a Minn Kota Maximizer. Saw one on their a week or two ago.

that would be an answer. just need to find a controller with more steps. that did not even cross my mind. that is how it works for us old guys.
