Thread: Long line smith lake

Never heard of anyone trying to long line on Smith. It is a deep clear mountain lake and for me was terrible to try to catch fish out of it. This is just my opinion but someone else may have some more info. Hope to see you on the water soon.

Roger is right. I used to have to fish bass tournaments there. Hated the place. Its deep . I mean deep. They should stock lake trout or red snapper in it. Guess some people over that way catch crappie in it maybe one of them will help you. Good luck to you. It is a pretty lake

That's what I thought. Never fished there, but went up there to look around once.

Its like most lakes, the people that grow up fishing on it or learn thru trial and error fishing it will catch fish usually. My fishing buddy works with a few people that fish the lake for crappie and they have some big catches, and a lot of them are big fish, and being smart don't advertise it too much as they want it to be a well kept secret. Most of the catches I have been told about are from brush piles and night light fishing. I think that the water being as deep and clear as it is makes it hard too hard on long lining but if you could figure out when and where they suspend you could maybe drag a few lines thru them or stick to the shore line easier said than done but at least in your travels you would eventually run over some of the brush piles I think. Most people when they think of Smith they think of stripped bass. and in the early days it was the Spotted bass capital of the world for awhile. So crappie has never been associated with it to much but they are there. ANd there are trout in it for those that might be interested in trying to find them suspended in the deep waters. They stock the water below the dam with trout each spring ,I figure someone took a few up above the dam over the years and let em go !

Never longlined in there but have done very well fishing the blow-downs

I have fished Smith for Crappie a good bit. I have had moderate success long lining on the upper end of the lake where it's only deep and not REALLY DEEP. Long lining the coves over brush and blow downs was the best I could find. I'm sure if you just go at it and try hard you can locate a few. Let me warn you, No your depth finder aint broke. Yes it is very near 300 feet in most places out on the channel. It is very deep and very clear. A tough lake to fish but if you can find the crappie they are usually pretty big.

If found they are usually very healthy too.
