Ship, you struck a note with me. When I was but a lad (4 or five?), my Grandfather Koenig gave me that advice, adding "whatever you are doing, whether it's school, work, sports, or anything else". I have done my best to follow that advice. I have always prayed that I would do my best and be a good witness.
Another piece of advice that Grandpa gave me was that anytime I had someone else's property in my possession, I should treat it better than my own, and return it in as good as, or better, condition.
He was a very wise man, whose advice was sought by every rancher and farmer in the county. He was also a heckuva fisherman, who showed me the ropes of trout fishing.
