The solos are reversable. I can't exactly remember right now what you do to make it right hand but I've reversed all of mine. You have to take the spool off and flip one piece over and then it will work. If I have time after work tomorrow I'll take one apart and refresh memory and take some pics if you like.
A quick search will get ya an answer.

I use a 9' fly rod and Daiwa fly reels with a drag, however I tight line fish using a single rod in water usually less than 12'. Never broke a gear but then again I don't catch as many quality large fish like you.
The solo reels are excellent..... For what they are. If you're looking to "reel" in a fish, I'd go another route.
With that said I have two and love em.
Take a look at the Eagle Claw in line ice reels. Pushbutton free spool, reversible and star drag. Best price I found was on Sportsman Guide. Have had no problems with mine.
Josh I have many Solos and love them. I use them for fishing our fairly shallow water and moderate size fish. They do have a drag on them which helps when fighting an occasional larger fish but for your situation where you are constantly hauling in large crappie and the possibility of a large buffalo, catfish, or striper, I think I would rather use a spinning reel. It would give you the advantage of a better drag system to fight the larger fish. Also since you are fishing straight down in the fish house the reel handle doesn't get in the way like it does when pitching jigs to shallow water targets, and it's easier to let out the line to get to the bottom in 20 plus feet of water.

Josh, I use Cabelas I think it is "Prestige Plus" fly reels that have a disc drag system that works for me. It is left hand or right hand reversible. The larger arbor keeps the line from getting line memory. They run that one on sale a couple of times a year @ 29.95.
