myself I enjoy trying with kip tail it is the quality that you buy so if you get a good grade they are more easily on the length of the material you can buy them sometimes that are terrible to work with just make sure that you find a good quality on the market I do buy them by the hundred and I do my own coloring on some I've had real good success with the black and some of the Brown has been real successful in the state of Oregon on the snake River I have used a black here locally in Toledo with real good success sometimes the fish want a slower action in this definitely happens with the kip tail. there are other materials that are similar I haven't posted so we will try to do this in the future.
I say buy kip tails that have longer hair unless your tying short jigs and then the short stuff is great! I mean if you tying on a small hook it doesn't take a long hair to fit it right!
Most of the kip tails I have tied have a #6 Sickle hook in them which means a short jig so short hair is not so bad, but if you tying on a regular bend #4 which is a lot longer hook then you may have some issues.
Personally I buy kip tails with longer hair!
