Neat looking jigs. If the idea for the lower belly hair is to bend back underneath I would add the 'beard' before finishing the chenille and add one more wrap of chenille n front. This would help angle the beard below the body.

First time with the kiptail. It may take a little getting used to but I think I'm going to like it.
Seemed like lots of under fur... I guess that's normal

Thanks JW I will try some like that tonight
I have never tied Kip tail before so last night after making a few I tank tested them the" beard" acted as a parachute and slowed the fall rate down tremendously compared to same jig head with plastic
Yes Kip can be hard to deal with especially when you get the shorter hair ones. They do catch fish very well though and even without that wing! I have tied some kind of like that a few years ago for some guys, but most of mine have no wing.
First time I ever fished one... here is the story: Some guys sent me some jigs to see if I could make them some like the ones they had and couldn't get any longer. So I got someone to make a mold for the head and designed it like I wanted the collar to be. Then he sent me 2 samples to try out so I tied the 2 jigs up and decided to get one wet. So I went down to my bank and plopped one in with a cork about a foot above. It sat there for a bit and I decided I liked another spot better so I lifted it up to move, but saw a flash under where I pulled it out so I put it right back in. 15 minutes later I had 3 and the smallest was 14", LOL! Needless to say I was a believer from that point on. Before that I just didn't like the idea at all.
That little head sure did well for me.

Nice ties for your first ones - if you hold the clump of hair after you cut if off take an old comb with fine teeth and just comb out the under fur and it will make it easier to tie. Also, tie it on over a thread base and it will help hold it tight.
Wait till you try squirrel tail!! That's a real slick material!!LOL
Actually I have a comb from some mustache kit that I use for taking my under fur out. Most any small fine comb will do.

Kip is a pain to me. It's frustrating to buy the material online an once you get it the hair is almost too short to work with.
Some folks I know on the fly boards hate kip tail - they use calf body hair instead. Only problem with that is there's no kink in the hair.
I have a fully equipped fly shop less than ten miles from my house so I got to browse through what they had... they aren't like cookie cutter tails. I sorted through and found the ones with longer hair and best color
The kip acts different from buck tail , or marabou I like it![]()
