sounds like the adjuster aint no mechanic either, thought they were supposed to go with the mechanics opinion.

I hit something submerged, probably a log since the area has no stumps. Adjuster says since there is no damage to the outside of the unit or the prop it is a mechanical failure of the pinion gear. The prop does have a couple of small nicks on it. The marine mechanic tells me that his experience indicates I hit something. I'm not a mechanic but I know I hit something. Anyone have any experience with the insurance company in such matters? I'm not willing to walk away. Any advice?

Only a couple of things that can damage the pinion gear.....most common is the prop hitting something.....the second is a bearing going out. I would get a opinion from another mechanic and if he agrees with the one you have already talked too then go back to insurance company with it and stand your ground.
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.

I hit something at Enid a couple years ago in my previous boat, ad my lower unit went out. Talked to my insurance, and she said have someone take the lower unit apart and send me the pics. They paid to get it replaced with no questions asked.
Took it to a second marine dealer today, Duncan Marine. Same opinion-hit something, pinion gear exploded and could see the point of impact, even pointed out a scar on the skeg. They said "we can handle this" . I called the adjuster and he came to Duncan. They spent about thirty minutes with him and he approved the claim. Hat's off to Duncan marine on hwy 25, Brandon. First look they said "we'll go to battle on this one for you. The insurance company is crazy." They did and I'm happy! (the first marine place did not want to be involved in the adjusters decision.)
