I hunt Dove, Grouse, Quail & Waterfowl not near as much as I used to. We are going to Michigan Grouse hunting in October.

I hunted pheasant in Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Kansas and quail here in IN. I still have an old bird dog. He is now 13 and retired. Love chasing pheasants haven't been out west the last few years. Now I got a 2 year old treeing feist out of world champion blood lines. With quail so scarce around here I didn't want to try to train another bird dog. I really do enjoy getting out with this feist too.

Growing up as a boy I got to hunt over a brittany spaniel. If that dog went on point without moving a muscle, it was a pheasant, if her tail wiggled you knew it was a rabbit. Sally was one of a kind.

I used to hunt upland and waterfowl with my CDC namesake "Ike." Ike used to go in the boat with me but he didn't like rough water and we get some kind of wind here in Oklahoma. He's been gone for awhile now and I swore I'd give up bird hunting as I felt I was too old to raise another pup. Then, I remembered that I didn't teach Ike anything - he taught me. We have Emma, a Westie who loved Ike and as a puppy dreamed of being a bird dog like him.

When he passed she mourned him and if you say his name today she looks up at you expecting to see him.

Anyway, to make a long story short I decided I couldn't live like that so I now have a deposit on a litter of Ike's distant cousins. I won't get to hunt this year but hopefully will next year. This one will probably be a lap dog and she may be a Crappie fishing partner as well as camping and hunting partner. Gotta make another run to Wisconsin.

RIP - Ike (Shooting Starr's Commander.)

Nice post. They just don't stay around long enough.

I remember the wind in OK. I fished the BASS Federation National Championship on Grand Lake in 1980 as a member of the GA team. Got fried by the sun AND wind.

I'm also a bird hunter, nothing better than a good dove hunt. I've got a chocolate lab for it and he's 9. He's a little hard headed sometimes but a good dog. When I first got him I knew I was going to name him Bear but I didn't know my wife and 2 daughters were going to add to it. So on his papers it has, "Sir Teddy Bear". I had to keep peace in the house.

I do have on my bucket list that I want to pheasant hunt in South Dakota or North Dakota. I think that would really be a blast. One of my wife's uncles use to go to S. Dakota for a week with family and friends just to pheasant hunt. They would pay the farmer X amount and hunt his farm all week. It was a good deal he did that for about 12 years or so before I met my wife. Yeah that's my luck always a day late and a dollar short.

I love to crappie fish and duck hunt. Have chased both all over the country. I don't think I would give up a duck hunt to go crappie fishing so I guess I like the fowl better but that season is short so it leaves plenty of time.
