Try to set the hook a little slower. That will give the fish a chance to get the hook positioned right in it's mouth.

Even though I'm not catching a large amount of crappie, I seem to be hooking a very high percentage in the eye socket. That's a great spot to hook a big fish during a tournament, but when fishing for fun and catching just keeper size fish it really bothers me to blind and potentially kill a fish. It doesn't seem to matter whether I am using a size 1 or 1/0 jig hook.
Any suggestions, or is it just the way it goes sometimes.![]()

The one time I went fishin' with Steve he kept yellin' that, too. I just assumed he was talkin' to himself!

sounds to me like your setting the hook just after they spit it out,, what you think is the bite is not,,,,
I guess I should have clarified. I mean into the eye socket from inside the mouth.
But when I hook them in the eye socket outside the mouth, it is actually before they bite, not after they spit it out. It's a sixth sense kind of thing and it makes Kaz proud when I'm that quick.
Drop your hook size down to a #2 maybe... just sounds like your large hook is getting farther back in the mouth than a smaller hook would. Either that or you're giving them too much time to chew on the jig & setting the hook as they're attempting to swallow it
