My 8 year old Great Grand Son and I bought some crickets yesterday and fished a pond. He caught one on second cast and caught 19 in about 1 1/2 hours. Kept largest ones for Grandma to cook for him and released the rest. Now if can get him into crappie and sand bass will have a GREAT fishing buddy for life.

Got mine at Southern Agriculture in Broken Arrow. Pet stores also carry them for lizards and such. Boy did they work.
If you're in the Tulsa area, Jack's Bait on Apache between Yale and Harvard usually has them as well as Nabatak in Claremore. Both places are much cheaper than pet stores (not sure how much they are at Southern Ag, they are $3 for 50/$5 for 100 at Jack's).

If I were catching yellow perch that were good eating size I would not worry about another species. Yellow Perch(I assume that is what he caught) are very closely related to Walleye and it doesn't get much better than that. We don't have a decent fishery for either in SC.

You'd be surprised by how many call em perch across the south, most know their sunfish, but can't stop calling em perch. I've had discussions with people over the years about it, even been asked, "What do you mean a perch ain't a perch?", and told (when shown a picture of a yellow perch) "that doesn't look like a perch at all."
Well even the official names are confusing. White Perch have invaded our reservoirs by the thousands and they are good to eat if you can find ones big enough. But, they are not a perch, actually in the bass family, closest related to the Striped Bass. Where they came up with White Perch is beyond me.
My Florida fishing buddy calls Crappie "Specs", and so it goes.

Don't some call Crappie White Perch? Funny how many different names fish are called in different areas. I'm all for it as long as they're fun to catch and taste good.
