    Default Cooking oil recipe

Guys, I read this in one of the outdoor mags and had to share it. I know I am going to try it, just have to!!

I have eaten bacon that was deep fried and it was really crispy. Kind of like when you deep fry turkey, really good and not greasy.

Will have to try this when my buddies are not looking less they die of heart failure thinking about it.

Heat 1 gallon of Canola Oil, add 2 lbs. of lard then 1 lb. of bacon. When the bacon is fried crisp, the oil is ready for fish.

Sounds good but I would be full of bacon before the fish was done.

Being full of bacon isn't a bad thing in my book.

My wife's Grandfather fried all his fish in lard, that was the best fish I ever ate.

Lard is great for frying (or anything), especially if you can find it fresh. Fresh lard biscuits smell just like an oven full of bacon. If you can keep the temperature low enough, you can cook all sorts of stuff in lard. Wild turkey legs and boston butt are my favorites. I use an 8-quart stock pot, low and slow. And the more you use the lard, the better it tastes.

I grew up working in my Father's county grocery store(50s and 60s). We sold lard not only in the 2,5 and 10 pound wax coated boxes (Luter's) but also in a 25 pound silver pail. My mom made biscuits with lard and buttermilk. She lived to age 96, but that stuff is bad for you. LOL

Some say hydrogenated vegtable oils are worse than lard now ! If we listened to all the hype about what not to eat we would plain starve .

Yea the older I get the more I think we fool ourselves as a society when it comes to eating. The more natural the better I think. All these additives, who knows which one contributed to my cancer? What I know is my grandparents raised a couple of hogs and always used lard. Neither died from heart disease. One from emphysema smoking roll your owns since he was a kid and one from diabetes and gangrene of the feet. Nothing better than those breakfasts on the farm with eggs fried in lard. Watchyagonna do?

I was fortunate that both sets of grand parents lived to their late 90's. Both had a tub next to the stove to put bacon drippings in. Both used lard. Must be something to it. What I do know is it is delicious!
