    Default Tachometer problem on Mercury


    Replaced rectifier and still no tach signal from gray wire. I can hook gray wire to yellow stator wire and get a signal for a few seconds. Boat is charging could stator be bad and still charge

    What year and size of motor? How are you measuring the signal? Meter should be set for AC voltage.

    2001 125 merc. Bill I checked stator and is at 13.2 idle 14.1 when throttled up. Guy told me I might have a bad rectifier even though it's new.

    If you have 14.1 VAC at the tach and you have a good ground and 12VDC on the tach then you probably have a bad tach. When working properly the tach will read about 1000 RPM with the key off and go to zero when you turn the key on. If this is happening then you know the 12VDC and ground is good. I have seen brand new rectifiers bad out of the box. Another thing you can try is move the gray wire at the rectifier to the other yellow wire coming from the stator. The tach doesn't care which lead is used. Have you tested the stator with your meter? With both yellow wires disconnected put a meter lead on each wire. With the meter set on the lowest ohm setting you should read about 1 ohm. Then read from each yellow wire to ground and it should read an open circuit. Hope that helps.
