Pinnacle Limit rods get the job done and I havent broken one in 4 or 5 years. They'll handle an ounce of lead just fine too. They also make some great longlining rods.

Get a good quality rod and then a nice little reel of your choosing.
Agree on the Shimano IX reels. I have several and they are excellent considering the price. They used to be $8-9 but have went up in last few years. Some Walmarts have them along with BassPro and Academy.

For spider rigging the BnM Pro Staff Trolling Rod in 14ft are mighty fine, replaceable tips are readily available. I been fishing some of the same rods close to 10 years, had them bent down under the boat more times than you can shake a stick at without breaking. You can long line with them as well. Monks Crappie has great prices and you can get the replaceable tips from him if you happen to break one. The 14 footers handle great not giving you that bulky telephone pole feel in your hand and giving adequate reach in shallow water applications. Fished them from 14-20 footers they all get the job done. I like Crappie Maxx bass style baitcasting reels to go on them. If it gets snatched out of the boat, this baitcaster is light enough for the 14ft PST to float without sinking, any heavier baitcaster and it will sink like a rock. I guess what I am getting at is I would recommend not skimping, buy less and add to collection as funds materialized.

Whatever the brand and length, the rods should be light action with moderate power and a hi vis tip. Take a look at the BPS Crappie Maxx Signature Series video as an example. The rod is light weight, will detect the lightest bites, has plenty backbone, and can be used for all applications i.e. spider rigging, jigging, long lining.

Agreed, tip jigs with minnows or use plain minnows when water temp is 60 and below, you can begin to use Kalin 2 inch grubs when the temp starts edging above 60 and they will murder them and you do not have to fool with minnows at all. Was going to say 55 degrees cause that is were I start long lining at, but when spider rigging with Kalin's I found a little warmer temp is needed for some reason for them to start hitting them real good.
