Get what winds your clock. Not much difference in all units performance that I can tell. Personal preference is in the eyes of the owner.

I'm looking to start upgrading my 15 year old depth/fish finders. I don't understand everything I should about the new equipment. I'm wanting to start at the bow with something to tie to at the console in the future. I jig fish hand held gps marked brush in the spring and troll at other times. I've been looking at 7 to 9 inch lowrance units. All suggestions including other brand welcome. Also what type transducer.

Shady, Call Brian at BBG Marine he is very helpful and great prices too.
CP and TNJB I don't know where to start with asking questions. I was just looking for some ideals about what type unit would be best for me before I call Brian.
It is overwhelming. I went thru this last year at this time. Good luck on your choices my friend.

If you want your first new unit to be on the bow, I would suggest DI with GPS

I run a 998 bird. But if I fished a boat like yours and wanted two units in the future I think I would have to consider the 959 DI combo for bow, then later add 999 or 1199 to console. On the 959 you would have 2d and DI and with the built in GPS it would be right close to your transducer. And you can network them and share info. Then on console unit it comes with internal GPS but you can add external antenna close to transducer on transom. On Lowrance if you want more than 2d then you have to consider the size of the transducer cause it is huge. Their HDS units ( which they are phasing out ) require a separate box to get Side and Down. New touch units have it built in. If you just wanted 2d right now you could get the touch 7 and just install 2d transducer. Later put a touch9 on console and network together.

Thanks Cray !!! I'm finally going to upgrade and am trying to get this done and don't know squat about this stuff. Just gathering info. Hope to see you soon.
I think if you told them about how much you are willing to spend(you get what you pay for most of the time) what kind of water your fishing mostly (depth of water) the way you fish mostly ( like spider rigging, ect.) they will be able to tell you more. For instance fishing shallow water 2-12 ft side imaging may be best were as deeper water like 20-40' down imagine would be best or by the best and have all of it. But the more information the better they can help you. This is like the old saying (for another nickle I could have went first class). With technology getting better everyday, by the time you pay for one thing they have something even better the next day. I think cray may have you figured out all ready and you can watch the units on youtube to further make up your mind. Just my two cents worth.and it didn't cost you nothing. Be safe and good luck fishing.
