When float fishing, I seldom fish more than 6-7'. A fixed float and 9' rod gets it done for me.

When fishing Bay Springs in the Summer, Fall or Winter, one must use a stop that will slide through the eyes good because the bait will have to get down to 20, 30 or even 40 ft to where the fish are. I use the ones from Wal-Mart and BPS, but would like to try something else. Mine seem to come undone after fishing with them for awhile.
When it's windy and rolling, I'll use a fixed float with my main line attached on the bottom of the float up to the depth that the rod is long. Keeps the bait in the strike zone longer by dragging the float level instead of bouncing the rod tips hard up and down.
The float size I use depends on the amount of weight I'm using. I want the float to have a near even buoyancy with the weight so the fish doesn't Feel the float when they hit, but the float still barely floats.
