Mainly because there is less and less structure in the lakes. Sardis is a fraction of what it was just 10 years ago. However, all I do is single pole fish and have success. A lot has to do with the water level when they start to spawn--and weather--rain AND wind. The spawn is about a 3 month process give or take a few weeks. I'd say the key to just about any crappie fishing is to keep moving. Stumps, grass beds, and those plants that look like soybean stalks are always good places for me. If the water gets up early, which is hardly does, it makes it easier with more cover to fish. I always use an orange jig head, white/chartreuse or blue/chartreuse skirt. Can't hardly go wrong with those in my book. One more thing. If they start spawning in 2 feet of water and the lake comes up 4 feet, they'll be right there in that same spot for a few weeks. Its just often hard to find that same spot again with the water up. My crappie 101 for today.

I single pole most of the time often doing it with 6 poles.
Crappie bite twice a day. 15 minutes before I get there and 10 minutes after I leave.
The sheep live in fear of the wolf but in the end it's the shepherd that eats them.
The two loudest sounds are a gun that goes click when it is supposed to go bang and
a gun the goes bang when it is supposed to go click.
Their seem to be less and less single pole guys on the big lakes. Most of the ones left are kinda like the fly fishermen purists who think it's a sin to catch a fish in any other fashion than an artificial on a string. If you were to travel east to the Ten-Tom waterway you would see a lot more of this style of fishing.
I would really like to know who told on me. A single poler till the day I die!!!
Grew up single poling, and still will do it when the crappie relate to structure really well. But I enjoy catching them how they are biting when I have time to fish. Wish I could catch em with a pole and 12ft aluminum boat and a paddle all year, sure would be a lot easier on the pocket book.
I still single pole only!!!!!!!!!![]()
MDWFP has data that says the preferred method of crappie fishing for 80% of the folks is now trolling. Major change in the last few years.
Here we go again...
