Default Connecting a gen 2 touch unit to older gen 1.

Currently I have a HDS 7 touch at the helm networked to a hds 5 gen 2 at the bow, they are linked together with a network cable to share waypoints and the side imaging.

I was thinking about purchasing a used gen 1 HDS 10 to replace the HDS 5 gen 2 at the bow but I Have a few quick questions I am hoping you guys can answer.

First question is can I link the touch unit to the gen 1 unit like I am currently doing with the gen 2 hds 5?

Second, do the older gen 1's use the same power cord as the gen 2? So if I did purchase a gen 1 unit to replace the HDS 5 gen 2, would I have to run a new power cord for the gen 1 unit or could I use the old power cord from the hds 5 gen 2 unit?

I am just trying to make sure that I can just remove the HDS 5 gen 2 and mounting bracket and really just put a gen 1 HDS 10 or so in its place without having to rewire everything.

Only reason I am thinking about this is the gen 1 HDS 10 units are starting to get really cheap, like $600 or so for a used gen 1 10 inch unit.

All you will have to change is the mounting bracket, the wires will plug right in.

If I only have hds10 at console how would I connect another HDS 10 to bow? Do you wanna have transducer on tm for accuracy to be right under you jigging? Also would tm transducer be 2d only or could you get down image also? Or would down image come from stern transducer the structure scan?

Yes you should be able to do what you are thinking. The power cords are the same. They will network also.

You already have Structure Scan installed? Either way all you have to do is run a Ethernet cable, either from the console unit to the bow unit or from the SS box to the unit on the bow. IMO a bow unit without a transducer of it's own is useless, so yes I'd put a 2d transducer on the tm. Unless you install another SS box or Sonar Hub on the bow or move you current SS transducer to the tm your SS image will come from the back via the Ethernet cable.

Justin hit the nail on the head. Yes, you could put a bow mount up front without a transducer but the only views you are going to get are from the back of the boat. With a bow mounted transducer and a stern, you can pick and choose which one to view from your front mount unit or your helm unit. If you own (or are planning to upgrade) to a new minnkota, get one with a US2 sonar built in. Makes it nice when you don't have to hard mount a transducer to the TM.

The us2 will that do structure scan? The console unit already has structure scan so I'll do another one on tm and Ethernet them and can choose between front or back correct? Also would a HDS gen 2 on bow be same way? Is there enough difference between gen 1&2 for extra $$

The US2 is 2d only. Gen 2s have faster processors and have a couple features the 1 doesn't. My advice would be to buy a Gen 2 Touch in whatever size you want then put a HDI transducer on the TM. This will give you DI and 2D up front.
