    Default Hooks for Gar?

Gonna try to thin out some gar in a private pond this weekend. I plan on using cut bait on treble hooks with about 2 - 3' of line on noodles. Is a treble hook a good choice?
Need a little input if you can.

Don't see why not...I doubt youll be worried about harming the fish when he swallows it. Just don't plan on getting too many of em back.

An old trick some old timers would use is to find some rope that you can unravel the ends with and get the gar to bite that and with all those teeth, they get stuck in the rope and then you just pull them out.

I was thinking the same thing Dwyane, but wasn't sure if it had to be used for casting or if it just works anytime.

I've caught them on cut bait several times, but not using treble hooks. I'd think they'd work fine though.

Go to Walmart and get some of them cheap wire leaders. Smaller trebles would probably work best. If your into fly fishing, you can take about a 4 to 6 inch piece of nylon trotline cord, tie it on and fray it out. Fish it just like a big streamer fly. Gets in their teeth and can't get loose. They will get to jumping and running like Tarpon.

Thanks all! I do have 12" leaders tied to 30lb mono. Think I will rig up a couple of noodles with the frayed nylon. Has to be a hoot to see one of the long nose varmints knotted up. Hope to have a gar fry. I have sliced small ones (24 - 32") about as thick as a big shrimp, soak um in buttermilk then batter & fry - been a real long time but I remember it being pretty good. lol Thanks to all. Will post results Knew I would get good input - such knowledge base of great people not afraid to share, great site.

Well wasn't gar day lol. They just didn't want our offering not even the frayed nylon - bummer. Did manage to catch a few bass and the wife caught a good mess of bream with crickets. Total seven bass all released to catch another day. Caught them on cranks. KVD 1.5
Picture of the two biggest Didn't weigh but about 1.75 - 2 lbs. maybe. As usual wife out fished me. Don't mind, she had a blast. Will get the gar another day.
