For all you Guys and Gals sitting around the house talking about how hot it is, how fish don't bite when it's this hot, how all crappie go deep when the air and water temps get on the high side, I would like to thank you for letting me and my my partner have the whole lake to our selves while snatching up some mighty fine slabs in water 13 feet deep and less, with water temps 90 plus. As the old saying goes, a pretty bait may not catch a lot more fish then an ugly one does, but it certainly will catch more fishermen. The hot water/air has little effects on southern fish, but it certainly keeps the fishermen at home. As summer comes along most fishing reports dry up as the fishermen quit going, not because the fish quit biting, but because of the fisherman's inability to adapt. A few changes in techniques, locations, and presentations can keep you catching all year long. Here's a few pics from this past Thursday and Friday while fishing the Santee Cooper lakes. Fish were caught on both jigs and minnows, with the nod again going to the live bait. Most fish were caught in and around structure like wood and vegetation.
One of the many nice fish from Thursday.
A fine white from Thursday.
The best fish from Thursday's haul.

Good job as always Tim and Tommy. Glad you are still on the fish.
By the way, if some of the pics look the same, Slab is having a problem with the site double posting pictures. He has been working on it most of the day. Apparently it is still acting up.

Great report and pictures as always! I'm with you on some fine summertime fishing! I too enjoy year round fishing and the summer months can produce some fine fishing if you change up your tactics. I personally believe the key to catching summertime fish is following the bait and figuring out when the fish are active. I rarely use live bait this time of year, due to the struggle to keep it alive, but I find that using smaller jigs will still catch a few. The fish that I catch seem slugglish and most are reluctant to bite, but with some coaxing you can draw a strike and to me it seems that the best fishing can be had in the heat of the day when the fish are seeking shady cover. I love dropping jigs around shallow cover (wood, brush, docks, ect.) this time of year and feeling a thump from a good fish. And, like you, I enjoy having the lake to myself.
Good report and pictures, congrats on the catch.![]()

Keep on em Ink. Good report.
Nice catch used to go to Santee in the summer back in the 70's for a few days at a time used to get tired of cleaning fish we caught so many (a lot younger back then) We have discovered a new hole nowadays LAKE WYLIE wow what a crappie lake been killing the slabs for going on three years now. If you have never been to Wylie I highly recommend it. It's a great lake for the monsters I compare it to Buggs Island about five years ago or High Rock ten years ago. It is definitely the IT lake at the moment
Fished Wylie many times over the years, have had some decent success in tournaments there as well. Most Catawba river lakes run in cycles, with Santee being one of them. Santee is on year 3 of a great bite but is definitely on a decline. Lake Wateree was smoking hot a few years back, as was Fishing Creek, it's probably Wylie's turn. All lakes cycle through good and bad times, much has to to with water levels, and fishing pressure. When Murray was down for a couple of years during dam repairs, fishing was awesome when it came back up. ClarksHill the same way, during the drought wood and vegetation grew on the lake shores that became submerged when the waters finally raised. Good spawning took place during drought conditions, with plenty of shallow structure for fry to live in when the waters came up. Once word gets out how good fishing is on a specific body of water, the fishermen travel there in droves until the numbers decline to the point that it isn't worth making the trip. Watch what I tell ya, Lake Hartwell will be phenomenal over the next couple of years now that the water has came back to full pool.
