Ky Lake report 8-3-14

I was wondering if quackrstackr and I were the only crappie fishermen left on KY Lake but after our trip Sunday, I'm convinced we are. We have not seen another crappie boat in weeks and absolutely nobody fishing like we are and in the same areas.

We trolled cranks for several hours Sunday. There was zero current and the baitfish were scattered all over the place from shallow to deep. One thing we noticed right off, the lack of current is causing somewhat of a thermocline in the large bays. It is not showing up as a vertical line on the electronics, it almost looks like interference on the screen at the depths below 12-14 feet. We decided to try to keep our baits above that depth so the big c55s and 300s were out. All the fish we caught were scattered from less than 10 feet to over 25 feet, one here/one there. None of the crappie we caught were over 13 inches or so but we did catch a couple of nice green carp that will be going on the grill tonight.

We ended up with 18 keepers with probably that many more lost after hooking them and who knows how many missed strikes. Many of the crappie we caught were barely hooked. I'm not smart enough to know why the fish are just smacking at the baits but we did manage to hook a few.

One note: I recently respooled all my line-counter reels with Trilene Big Game solar green 12 pound test line. I lost one crank yesterday when I dropped a 5 oz weight with crank and leader attached over the side after the line had gotten behind the reel spool and broken. That is the 1st crank bait I have lost in 4 trips since I went to the Big Game 12 pound line. I hung up 3-4 times yesterday and pulled loose cranks that I'm 100% sure I would have lost on the 10 pound mono I had been using.

Nice Doug. You are putting it on some fish!! Lots of big rock fisherman use Big Game. I am stuck on braid for everything. Even my micro guide 11' jigging sticks have 832 slick braid. I'm hoping Terry's getting off of the boat means that we'll get some rain so there can be some current in the lake. Very bizarre fishing the last several weeks. We caught 2 fish where I found them last weekend and the conditions haven't changed a bit. Makes it tough to put a pattern of any kind together.

I was wondering if it was cool enough to wear a jacket while trolling? Its so stinking hot over here that I can't find anyone that can stand the heat! Saturday I fished the river here in town at the waterfall and caught everything but a tuna. I for one can't wait for cooler weather!

They may be green carp and not crappie but they sure did turn out good on the grill. My wife loves fish but she said this was probably the best she had ever eaten. She did ask me to lay off the black pepper a little next time. She didn't say anything about the Tony Chachere's creole seasoning. I can't cook without that stuff!

shame on you for doing that to a nice bass you're gonna break some bass guy's heart!!!

You ain't breakin' my heart! I'm a bass guy too, but there ain't nothin' better than grillin' up some bass fillets! It's just a shame they have to be 15" here on Kentucky Lake. I think the 12 inch'rs are better. All it needs is a little Texas Pete to light up the Tony Chachere's!

I had one get real POed at me when I showed him the one I was taking home from Monroe Lake in Indiana, thought he was going to punch me out for a minute there
