    Default D10......An Enhanced DNA Question

    D10.....

My mind works in funny ways when I'm sitting on a hot fishing hole.........meaning hot weather, and no bites!!

I remember the size that chickens used to be. Now? Dang things are huge. Hardee's even has the funniest commercial ever about HUGE chicken breasts. And they are!! Some of the breasts I see for sale at Kroger's would have to come off of 3 foot high chickens.

Pigs, same way......but usually different. Leaner, less fat meat.

    Cows, etc etc etc...

What happened? DNA Enhancement happened, that's what. It's even in vegetables. Insect resistant. Bigger.

So......why not fish? Is anyone doing it? Why not 8 lb crappie? Or 4 lb crappie with a bream strain that makes 'em eat crickets and worms and fight like an MMA champion? Dang, it'd take an "E" piano wire to land 'em.

But seriously, are there any efforts anywhere to genetically enhance any game fish????

It is there in Salmon, Carp and Catfish in the way of hybrid crosses anf tripaloids. Even F1 strain of Large Mouth Bass ( first cross between (Northern / Florida LM Bass) Mean Mouth Bass (Spotted / Small Mouth Bass). Wipers (Striper/ White Bass) Saugeye (Sauger / Walleye) Hybrid Catfish (Blue / Channel). But many are limited to certain water because of gene pool containation.

OK. Those are cross breeds. That's not exactly the same as injecting specific DNA into a living organism to add/delete certain characteristics. Crossbreeding could be done, I guess (?), at fish hatcheries, etc. DNA modification would have to be a laboratory issue, I think (?).

More about this that I do not know, that I do.........but it's done on other animals, just wondered why not fish?

I know tripaloids (Salmon , carp, Trout ) are modified in the lab.

    Hmmm. Interesting stuff.

I just thought of all this, and know nothing. Just wondering if it's done, and if not, why not?

I am not aware of any genetic medication going on in Arkansas. I'm not sure that would be a good idea. As with many thing in nature, they were created that way for a reason. Often times when man starts screwing with things too much, it has unintended consequences. Some times a positive outcome will occur, but this is not always the case.

Good point. I wasn't pro or con on it.......just curious if it was being done or not.

Buck rub, it's not being done because there is not money behind it like there is in the poultry industry (100s of billions of dollars per year). I agree with Matt (D10), that even if we could, it would more likely be bad than good. I personally choose not to eat a lot of the mass produced good available today just because I don't think anyone knows if it's really safe or not.
