    Default TWRA/KY Lake Meeting

TWRA will be attending a meeting organized by interested KY Lake Crappie fishermen. Just curious about the agenda. Will someone within the group of interested fishermen kindly share some insight as to what topics will be discussed? Thanks in advance.

The article identified "more than a few fishermen" have proposed a couple of "fixes" that I don't agree with. More than likely (particularly with respect to proposed pole limits), the fix won't be supported by facts...just opinion. Problem is, if enough people say something, TWRA will listen. I guess I will have to make the 1.5 hr. drive to attend.

Yeah, the identification of "more than a few fishermen" could be the same "few" constantly making their voices heard, and unless names were collected along with the "opinions", that could easily be the case.
Pole limits won't solve anything ... consider Weiss Lake, Alabama !! They have a pole limit, yet they still stock the lake with Crappie.
Dropping the creel limit from 30/day to 20/day might not be a bad thing, but it will take several years before any concrete evidence that it's helping will be known. KY did that a few years ago, on KY Lake ... and the changing dynamics of the lake, along with the variable weather patterns, hasn't shown that the creel limit change has been positive or negative. Most think the major factor is the control of the water levels during the spawning period ... something which the KDFWR nor the TWRA has any control over.

A whole lot of the time such "fixes" are nothing but emotions or jealousy by some who see the boat next to them catching a limit with a longline or spider rig set-up and decide they will get the powers that be to level the playing field by taking away privileges from those who happen to be catching more fish. Creel limits are the same with one pole or 20. Size limits are the same.

Those who enjoy multi-pole fishing had better be willing to stand up for their rights or a small bunch of loud mouths can get their way. We should all be able to disagree without being disagreeable but when something like this is facing me, I will be heard.

Good luck guys. I'm sure we will be facing it up here soon enough and you can bet I'll stand up for my rights if it hair-lips the whole world.

I had no problems catching fish this spring. You just gotta fish where the fish are gathered. chaunc and I found them on one of those "off" days. There wasn't a boat in sight of where we were catching.

Do I need to take some Nuks to the meeting?

The fishing was not as good as other springs but I still found plenty of fish. I disagree completely with anyone who thinks lowering the pole limit is a good idea. Everyone has the same opportunity to catch their limit. I mainly single pole fish and I would argue that on certain days I can do just as good with one pole as people can spider rigging. The water was fairly stable this year so maybe we will had a good spawn. It should be an interesting meeting and I plan to be there.

You guys are right on the mark. One or two screwy springs certainly does not justify the sort of knee jerk reactions being proposed. I spider rig exclusively and because of this year's high winds or fish holding close to structure, I have been humbled by the single polers and long liners far too many times than I care to admit. The point is that no one method of fishing is always going to trump the others and the same old spots might not always produce. One thing is for certain though, TWRA will bend to the will of what it perceives as being the consensus of public opinion. I'll be there too.
